Why use my valuable time to listen to other people's stories?
- There are so many lessons to learn from other people’s life experiences.
- Many times, life’s most valuable lessons are learned in uncomfortable and sometimes even extremely painful circumstances.
- By exposing yourself to stories, you get the opportunity to internalize these lessons, without having to “learn the hard way”.
- It’s like we’re “cheating” learning itself.
- This is how you learn: you have a theory about the world. You live and do by this theory. Say, it’s “adults are to be trusted”. Most are taught this as a kid. And that theory works well – until you are misled by one. You don’t learn that this theory isn’t fully correct until you go through an experience that counters the theory.
- Hearing people’s stories is a way to learn without having the encountering experience – which sometimes can be a very negative one. Use the value from other people’s experiences.
- We’ve all heard the saying “don’t judge a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes”. And that’s so true. We are all swayed by our surroundings. And you don’t know what others have been through. Listening and understanding to what other’s have gone through will consistently make you a more empathetic and understanding person.
